BOSTON -- The jury in the Boston Marathon bomber trial has sentenced Dzhokhar Tsarnaev to death by lethal injection.

According to the Associated Press, Tsarnaev, 21, stood with his hands folded as he learned of the decision, which came after 14 hours of deliberations.

Tsarnaev was convicted in April of all 30 federal charges against him, 17 of which carried the possibility of the death penalty.

Three people were killed and more than 260 were injured when the bombs exploded near the finish line of the marathon on April 15, 2013.

Tsarnaev's lawyer admitted Tsarnaev participated in the deadly 2013 attack, but said his older brother, Tamerlan, was the mastermind. Tamerlan Tsarnaev was killed in a shootout with police four days later.

The decision could result in the nation's first execution of a terrorist in the post-9/11 era. However, the case is likely to go through years of appeals.
