Google is helping some girls in the city take a crack at coding.

The tech company held an event Friday to teach coding to 35 female students in the five boroughs.

Google says less than one percent of female students in the U.S. study computer science.

Organizers of the event, "Made with Code," said they are trying to get girls excited about computers at a young age.

"What we've found in our research is there are a lot of girls who are really interested in STEM," said William Floyd the Head of External Affairs for Google New York. "They're interested in science, technology, engineering, math very early on in life."

"But then, when it comes to going into computer science, all of a sudden they drop off," Floyd continued. "So what we've seen is that they support, they need encouragement."

The "Made with Code" campaign launched June 2014.
